Ayurveda: The Ancient Science of
Healing and Wellness
Bring balance to your life with Ayurveda
The foundation of Ayurveda is based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit. This balance is achieved by maintaining the proper functioning of the body’s natural processes, such as digestion, circulation, and metabolism.
According to Ayurveda, there are three fundamental energies, or doshas, that govern the body and its functions: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Each person has a unique combination of doshas that determine their physical and mental characteristics, and their susceptibility to certain health conditions.
Ayurvedic treatments aim to restore balance to the body by addressing the root cause of an imbalance, rather than simply treating symptoms. These treatments include massage therapy, herbal remedies, and dietary modifications. Ayurveda also emphasizes lifestyle changes, such as regular exercise, stress management techniques, and mindfulness practices, as a means of promoting overall health and well-being.
As part of the Indian traditional medicine, Ayurveda is still widely practiced in India and is becoming increasingly popular in European countries as well. While it is not considered a replacement for modern medicine, it is often used in conjunction with modern medicine to achieve optimal health outcomes.
Ayurveda Panchakarma
One of the most well-known practices in Ayurveda is Panchakarma, a cleansing and rejuvenation therapy. Panchakarma is designed to eliminate toxins from the body and restore balance at all levels. It typically involves a series of treatments, such as herbal enemas, oil massages, and steam therapy, that help to remove impurities from the body and promote overall health.
Panchakarma treatments help in:
- Detoxification: Cleanses the body of impurities and toxins.
- Rejuvenation: Improves energy levels, promotes cell growth, and enhances overall well-being.
- Stress relief: Reduces stress, anxiety, and depression.
- Immune system boost: Strengthens the immune system, making the body more resistant to diseases.
- Pain management: Alleviates chronic pain and inflammation.
- Improved digestion: Improves digestive function and reduces symptoms of indigestion, constipation, and other digestive issues.
- Better sleep: Promotes restful sleep, improving sleep quality and reducing insomnia.
- Better skin: Improves skin health and reduces symptoms of skin conditions such as acne and eczema.
- Mental clarity: Improves mental clarity and cognitive function.
- Overall balance: Brings balance to the three doshas and promotes overall health and wellness.
Pancha means five, Karma means action. Panchakarma refers to five forms of detox therapy you may experience during the treatment.
Following your consultation, the doctor(s) will prescribe a treatment plan depending on your conditions and duration of stay in the Ayurveda resort/centre. The treatment may include one or more of the five detox therapies:
1. Virechana – medicine induced purgation. Oral medicines are given to induce evacuation of the bowels.
2. Vamana – medicine induced vomiting. Oral medicines are given to induce vomiting, which helps in eliminating toxins from the tissues.
3. Nasya – nasal detox. Medicated oil or powder are poured into the nostrils, followed by a massage of the synuses area. It clears and cleanses the synuses and the entire head area.
4. Vasti – this procedure involves administering of prescribed oils and decoction combinations through the ano-rectal route to help balance the Vata dosha.
5. Raktamokshana – this traditional method makes use of leeches or sterilized sharp instruments to remove impure blood from the body.
Ayurveda and Yoga
In Ayurvedic treatments, Yoga is often used in combination with other therapies, such as massage and herbal remedies, to provide a comprehensive approach to healing. It is also usually recommended as a regular practice to maintain good health and prevent illnesses. Overall, Yoga plays a key role in Ayurvedic treatments and is seen as a powerful tool to achieve and maintain balance in the body and mind.
FAQ
Why should I consider Ayurvedic Panchakarma?
Stress, pollution and poor lifestyle decisions lead to an accumulation of toxins and waste products in the body. They enter the tissues and circulation system resulting in poor health. Panchakarma helps reducing this degenerative process, resulting in a significant and long lasting positive impact on your body, mind and soul. Panchakarma can also bring wonderful results in weigh loss and recovery from burnout.
What kind of diseases can be managed with Ayurveda?
Ayurveda helps in curing and managing a wide range of acute and chronic conditions. Among the most common are: rheumatic diseases, digestive disorders, depression, ADHD, addictions, skin diseases, joint disorders, back pain, eye diseases, high cholesterol, asthma, anxiety, autoimmune disorders (Lupus Eritematos) and neurological conditions (Parkinson, multiple sclerosis).
What is the required period for Panchakarma?
The ideal period for achieving a good detoxification and rejuvenation is 21 days. In some cases, 28 days and more are recommended for people with chronic, degenerative conditions or for people suffering from multiple diseases (co-morbidities). If it is not possible for you to take a 21 days Panchakarma treatment, then try as much as possible to take at least 10 to 14 days. This is because the body needs first to be adequately prepared for the cleansing and detoxification and this preparation takes about 7 days.
Is Yoga practice mandatory during an Ayurveda retreat/Panchakarma treatment?
While Yoga is an integral part of Ayurveda and many Yogic practices are useful to combine with Panchakarma, some people may not be sufficiently fit to practice Yoga. The general perception about Yoga, especially among elderly people, is that Yoga requires a lot of strength and flexibility to be performed. However, one should know that there are a lot of Yoga practices which are very easy to perform even from sitting on a chair if some people cannot sit comfortable on the floor, with crossed legs. Ayurveda doctors usually prescribe a series of Yoga practices for each health condition as well as more widely-used practices for the overall improvement of flexibility, blood circulation, mental clarity, sleep, and digestion. If you find yourself unable to perform any kind of Yoga, don’t worry – talk to your doctor or Yoga teacher and he/she will provide the right guidance. It is better to be honest and accept your body’s limitations rather than pushing yourself to keep up with the postures/practices during the Yoga class – which can be even harmful for your body and mind.
Do I have to stop taking my regular medicines during Ayurveda treatments?
This is an important question and you should discuss this aspect with your advisor/doctor before packing your bag for India. In some cases it is recommended to stop or reduce the intake of allopathic medicines during Panchakarma/Ayurveda treatments, unless they are used in treating serious conditions like diabetes, hypertension, autoimmune diseases,.. . But in general, Ayurveda doctors do not interfere in decisions taken by other (Western) doctors and they advise guests to continue their prescribed treatments during Panchakarma. If someone wants to switch from allopathic medicines to Ayurvedic medicines it is usually recommended to do this gradually and observe how the body reacts to the change. Make sure you discuss with your doctor(s) before taking any decisions concerning your treatment options and the potential risks of changing medicines.
What are the short-term and long-term benefits of Panchakarma?
During Panchakarma treatment the body and mind go through a deep process of cleansing, which may lead to symptoms like nausea, digestive issues, dizziness, and release of blocked emotions. Given the change in the diet during Panchakarma – no meat and diary products, no fried food, no sweets, very little fruits, no alcohol or other intoxicants – some people may feel discomfort as they perceive the treatment as disruptive from their daily habits. However, the good news is that after about 7-10 days of treatment, the body and mind begin to feel balanced, light and transformed. The results are even more impressive after 21 or 28 days’ treatment. Among the long-term benefits are weight loss, fat reduction, better sleep, more balanced emotions, better digestion, radiant and youthful skin, higher levels of energy and resistance to stress.
